Make the Most of Fall In Pocahontas County

Autumn in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, is about more than the vibrant foliage that covers the mountains. This time of year brings unique outdoor experiences and events you won’t want to miss. Here is how to make the most of fall in Nature’s Mountain Playground. 

Ride Through The Mountains 

For a memorable leaf-peeping experience, hop aboard a steam-driven train at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. These trains climb steep grades and wind through switchbacks along the original logging railroad to some of the highest points in the state. Choose from three different excursions departing from the Cass Depot, each offering sweeping views of the colorful mountains. 

Take A Hike 

One of the best ways to experience the foliage is to walk right beneath it. Hike through the vast Monongahela National Forest, from the cascading Falls of Hills Creek to the storybook scenery of the red spruce forest in the Gaudineer Scenic Area. At the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area, follow the half-mile boardwalk through a high-altitude bog and learn about the rare local ecosystem and the plants and wildlife that call it home. 

If you’re traveling with kids, explore the unusual rock formations surrounding the boardwalk at Beartown State Park or climb to the top of the lookout tower at Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park for an incredible autumn vista. 

Cruise The Open Road 

It’s not a fall trip to Pocahontas County unless you’ve taken a drive through rolling farmlands and winding mountain passes. Cruise the Highland Scenic Highway, a 43-mile stretch from Richwood to U.S. Route 219, just north of Marlinton. This route crosses the Allegheny Highlands, climbing from 2,325 feet to over 4,500 feet. Make time to stop at four roadside overlooks along the way for wide-open views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. 

Another great option for a scenic drive is U.S. Route 219, which runs north-to-south through much of the county. Plan the ultimate road trip with stops along the route at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, Beartown State Park and Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park. 

Cast A Line 

Known as the Birthplace of Rivers, Pocahontas County is home to the headwaters of eight rivers. Add five lakes and countless streams to the list, and you’ll find plenty of trusted fishing holes. 

With cold, clear waters and regular stockings, spend a day casting for trout in our local rivers and streams. Try your luck on the Cranberry River, considered one of the top trout streams on the East Coast, and the Williams River, one of West Virginia’s premier trout fisheries. Enjoy fly-fishing on Knapp Creek or plan a full family getaway to Watoga State Park and fish along the shores of Watoga Lake. 

Enjoy The Views

Take in the best views from dusk to dawn. Start your morning on the Highland Scenic Highway at the Little Laurel and Big Spruce overlooks and watch the sun come up over the mountains. For a sunrise you won’t forget, head to the TM Cheek Memorial Overlook at Watoga State Park and see the morning light stretch across the Greenbrier River Valley and Kennison Mountain.

As the day comes to an end, watch the stars twinkle over Watoga Lake. Watoga State Park, Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park and Calvin Price State Forest are West Virginia’s first and only International Dark Sky Parks. So, wherever you choose to stargaze, you won’t be disappointed. 

Celebrate the Season 

Fall wouldn’t be complete without a trip to a corn maze, and CW’s Corn Maze provides the quintessential autumn experience. Located just minutes from Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, this 10-acre maze is a seasonal favorite for locals and visitors. This cook-off challenges chefs to get creative with wild game dishes. Purchase a $10 wristband to sample a variety of entries and see what local cooks come up with. After you’ve voted on your favorite, browse local vendors and listen to mountain music. 

Cranberry Shindig

Location: Cranberry Mountain Nature Center

Date: September 27

Set in the mountains and surrounded by beautiful fall color, the Cranberry Shindig is a one-day celebration of Appalachian culture. Catch live music, join an old-time square dance and watch skilled artisans demonstrate traditional crafts such as blacksmithing, pottery, spinning and woodturning. Before the day comes to an end, explore vendors selling everything from handcrafted goods to local products and food. 

Huntersville Traditions Day

Location: Huntersville

Date: October 2

Step back in time in Huntersville, Pocahontas County’s first county seat, settled in 1821. During the annual Huntersville Traditions Day, enjoy live mountain music, clogging performances and more. On Saturday, take a wagon ride, explore a Civil War encampment and watch traditional craft demonstrations. Guided tours of the Huntersville Jail, Museum and Presbyterian Church, which served as a Civil War hospital, are also available and offer another look into the area’s past. 

Eight Rivers Quilting Party

Date: October 15-17

Quilting has long been a part of Appalachian life, not only as a craft but as a way to tell stories and bring people together. That tradition continues in Pocahontas County with the Eight Rivers Quilting Party. This three-day event includes quilting classes focused on hand sewing and quilting techniques.
